Mauritius honeymoon murder: lawyers seek to detain husband

Mrs McAreavey, the 27-year-old daughter of the Tyrone Gaelic football boss
Mickey Harte, was found dead in the bath by her husband. He told the court
last week that he had returned to their room to look for her after she left
the poolside restaurant where they were having tea to fetch some biscuits.

Two hotel workers, Mr Moneea and Avinash Treebhoowoon, 31, are accused of
murdering Mrs McAreavey after she caught them stealing from a purse she had
left in her hotel room.

Mr Treebhoowoon initially confessed to the murder, but later claimed he had
suffered three days of torture by police.

It is unclear who previously knew about the footage, or whether the time of
Mrs McAreavey’s death is in dispute.

Raj Theekoy, the prosecution’s star witness and another cleaner at the hotel,
told the court that he was standing outside the couple’s room and heard a
woman cry out at about 2.45pm on the day of the murder.

Police said that electronic key card records showed a key used by hotel
cleaners accessing the room at 2.42pm and a guest’s key accessing the room
at 2.44pm.

Mr McAreavey told the court that his wife left the restaurant at 2.40pm to go
back to their room.

He said that when he went back to the room, at 2.55pm, he could not get in and
went to find a bellboy with a spare key. When he entered room 1025 at around
3.20pm, he said he found his wife unconscious in the bath with the taps
running. Later challenged on his recollection of events, he said: “I will
make no excuse for not having each and every detail recorded because at that
time it was not at the top of my mind.”

Dick Ng Sui Wah, a lawyer acting for the McAreavey family, said the tape was
simply being used as an “excuse to divert attention from the real culprit”.

“Anyway John McAreavey will stay till the end of the trial. He wants to know
the final verdict,” he told Mauritius’s Radio Plus.

“Not only John but the Harte family as well and also the Irish embassy is
following the case. All this is complete insanity.”
