Mauritania to probe ex-Libyan spy chief

The officials also added that Interpol would be involved in their investigations.

Earlier, Libyan government spokesman Nasser al-Manee formally requested the extradition of the former spy chief from Mauritanian authorities, announcing his government’s readiness to “give him a fair trial in Libya.”

On Friday, Senussi was arrested in Mauritania’s capital of Nouakchott upon his arrival from Casablanca, Morocco.

Senussi is the last significant fugitive figure affiliated with the former regime of slain Muammar Gaddafi.

Last June, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued warrants against former Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi, his son Saif al-Islam and al-Senussi on charges of crimes against humanity during the former regime’s brutal crackdown on the anti-government protests in Libya in 2011.

The former intelligence chief has also been held responsible for the notorious massacre of over 1,000 inmates in Libya’s Abu Salim prison in the capital city, Tripoli, in 1996.
