“I don’t want to ruin it for people, you know? Whenever people say it’s Springfield, Ohio, or Springfield, Massachusetts, or Springfield, wherever, I always go ‘Yup, that’s right.'”
Groening also revealed that he named some incidental characters in the sitcom after “lugs” who picked on him at school.
“Maybe they are characters named after themselves on ‘The Simpsons.'”
He also had the fictional Simpson family live on his own childhood street, Evergreen Terrace in Portland, and named streets in the show after ones in Portland.
The tales of doughnut-loving father Homer Simpson, named after Groening’s own father, and his dysfunctional family have become a staple of American culture.
The show is broadcast in more than 100 countries and its satirical take on American middle class life has earned 27 Emmy awards.
In fictional Springfield the school is falling apart, there is a constant fire at the town dump, and the mayor is corrupt.
The real Springfield, Oregon is currently facing a struggling economy with average income under $40,000 and nearly one in five people living below the poverty line. There are dozens of people called Simpson living there.
A statement released later on the official Homer Simpson Twitter account said: “Crap, we live in Oregon? I don’t know what state we live in, but our house is worth a lot less than in 2007.”
