An Ivy League professor was the reason for the delayed take off of an American Airlines flight because another passenger mistook math equations he was scribbling for some sort of terrorist plot involving the airplane. In fact the plane almost got in the air but returned before take off, all due to a note handed to a flight attendant by his seat mate who was a little too interested in his reason for deflecting conversation.
Guido Menzio, an economics professor at the University of Pennsylvania, was on the way to Canada to give a talk at the Queen’s University in Ontario. While he was waiting for takeoff he was solving a differential equation, just for fun, because that what genius’ do. They don’t play Clash of the Clans on their smart phone, they solve complex math equations that might be mistaken for a foreign language by the lesser educated.
That’s exactly what happened. The woman who reported him for his actions, mistook his math problem for arabic and her islamaphobia got the best of her. She also claimed to be too ill to complete the flight but that might be a cheap excuse to avoid taking that flight. The TSA has never caught a single terrorist, so the logical conclusion is that the first one ever caught would be an economics professor doing complex math in the cheap seats of an American Airlines flight.
The spokesperson for American said the crew was following procedure and just helping an ill passenger. However the identity of the lady who was so concerned with possible terrorists activity that she remained anonymous, while the identity of the economics professor will forever be linked to this unfortunate mishap.
The unintended consequences of the police state is a constant state of paranoia that infects those who support the current paradigm of security theatre. These delusions can lead to long-lasting effects on your psyche and cause you to make paranoid decisions that are premature by nature and fueled by a fraudulent trust in strangers to protect you.
The real threat to your freedom isn’t 3rd world citizens strapped with bombs boarding airplanes with the intent of crashing them into the skyscrapers. You confuse that with the current ruling class, the government monopoly on the initiation of force. The police will always enforce the law. Regardless of who is writing it and that is a threat to your freedom. The idea that someone would sign up to violently enforce a flip-flopping doctrine of violence of invasion and violence while perpetrating as a hero protecting us from imaginary threats is exactly what allowed us to get to this point in the first place.
Combine that with the comfort of being able to dial three numbers and have strangers do violence on your behalf and you have a recipe for disaster that is delicious and eagerly devoured. When you remove the responsibility of self-defense and place it onto the state, the establishment. You remove yourself from any responsibility when it comes to your own security, furthering the growing reach of the police state.
