nsnbc : Units of Syria’s Popular Self Defense Units and the Syrian Arab Army discovered a mass grave in the northeastern parts pf Palmyra. The city as well as the ancient UNESCO World Heritage site has recently been wrested out of the grip of the self-proclaimed Islamic State. ISIL committed a massacre in Palmyra in March 2015, killing an estimated 400. Russian UN envoy Vitaly Churkin addressed the UN Security Council, stressing that Turkey is the main provider of arms and explosives for ISIL, using NGOs for arms the trafficking.
The mass grave was discovered in the Masakin al-Jahizia neighborhood of the city of Palmyra when units of the Popular Self Defense Units were combing the area. The Syrian Arab Army (SAA), Popular Self Defense Units and Russian Engineer troops are currently in the process of clearing the city, the UNESCO World Heritage Site, the airport and surrounding areas for land mines, improvised explosive devices and other hazards and death traps left behind by the Islamic State (ISIL / ISIS / Daesh).
Initially the remains of 25 persons including those of three children and five women were unearthed. A more thorough exhumation resulted in the discovery of additional fifteen bodied, all of them worm and children, bringing the number of victims up to forty thus far while efforts to find additional victims continue.
In May 2015 ISIL omitted a massacre in Palmyra, killing an estimated 400 people, most of them women, children and elderly. It is likely that Army and Self Defense units will discover more mass graves as the dismantling of IEDs and land mines continues. The SAA restored control over the city on March 27, after a several day-long, sustained campaign that was supported by units of the Syrian and Russian Air Forces.
Russia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Vitaly Churkin stressed that Turkey still is the main source of weapons and military equipment for the Islamic State. On Friday Churkin distributed a letter at the UN Security Council, stating that Turkish intelligence are supplying ISIS in Syria with weapons and military equipment. Churkin was citing data about such activity which took place on November 2015 and January 2016.
Addressing the press, Churkin noted that Moscow had presented the Security Council with evidence containing figures about Turkey’s illegal supplying of weapons and military equipment to ISIS in Syria, with Turkey employing NGOs to transport weapons an via humanitarian aid convoys under the supervision of Turkish intelligence.
Churkin pointed out that ISIS has received explosives valued at USD 1.9 million in 2015 alone, elaborating further by stating that ISIS received from Turkey 2,500 tons of ammonium nitrates valued at USD 788,700, 456 tons of potassium nitrates valued at 468,700, 75 tons of aluminum powder valued at 496,500, sodium nitrates valued at 19,400, glycerin valued at 102,500, and nitric acid valued at 34,000.
