Martin O’Malley, Maryland Governor, Rips ‘Constipation Congress’ On Economy, Jobs

Hours after the arrival of Friday’s bleak economic news, Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley pointed a finger straight at the legislative branch.

Speaking before a convention of New Hampshire Democrats on Saturday, O’Malley blasted “Republican obstructionists” for their failure to enact measures to help the economy.

“We have a constipation Congress,” said O’Malley on the GOP’s blockage of President Barack Obama’s jobs efforts. “If they thought it could help the recovery speed up, these people couldn’t even pass gas.”

Obama echoed O’Malley’s sentiments in his weekly address, prodding Congress to take action. Friday morning’s jobs report fell far below expectations, with the unemployment rate leaping back up to 8.2 percent. Stocks paralleled that picture, plunging more than 200 points to erase all of 2012’s collective gains.

“Congress hasn’t acted on enough of the other ideas in that bill that would make a difference and help create jobs right now,” said Obama in the address. “And there’s no excuse for that. Not when so many people are looking for work. Not when so many people are struggling to pay the bills. So my message to Congress is, get to work.”
