Mark Sanford on SC runoff win: ‘I’m humbled and overwhelmed by support’

Mark Sanford, former governor of South Carolina, will be the Republican candidate for the 1st Congressional District seat, after defeating Curtis Bostic in a runoff election Tuesday. Sanford will face Democratic candidate Elizabeth Colbert Busch in the May 7 election.

The First District is made up of five counties along the Atlantic coast of South Carolina and includes the coastal towns of Charleston and Hilton Head.

“First and foremost, I’m humbled and overwhelmed by the support we’ve received across the district, and more than anything, I’d like to thank the people of the 1st District for choosing me from a great field of Republican candidates,” Sanford said in a statement after his victory. “As well, I’d give real credit to my runoff opponent, Curtis Bostic, for the campaign he’s run.

Sanford and Busch will face off for the House of Representatives post vacated when Gov. Nikki Haley appointed then-Representative Tim Scott to replace Jim DeMint, who announced Dec. 6 that he would leave the U.S. Senate to become the next president of The Heritage Foundation.

Sanford received the most votes in an earlier primary but the runoff was necessary after none of the Republican candidates got a majority of the votes cast.

In Tuesday’s election, the majority of the voters in Beaufort County (Hilton Head) cast their ballots for Bostic, but Sanford received the majority of the votes cast in Berkeley, Colleton, Charleston and Dorchester counties.

Sanford, the two-time governor and former member of the House of Representatives, made headlines across the country when he admitted an affair after disappearing for several days in 2009 when serving as governor of South Carolina. Sanford finished his term in office.
