Investigators are also trying to identify and question the person who filmed
the scene.
The video, which was posted on YouTube, showed the four US servicemen laughing
as they urinated on three corpses in the dust. It was not certain whether
the dead were Taliban fighters or civilians.
CBS News reported that, on their return to Camp Lejeune, the Marines “apparently
started showing the video around as a war trophy.”
The incident caused outrage in Afghanistan and dismay at the Pentagon.
President Hamid Karzai called it “simply inhuman,” while US
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said it was “deplorable” and
that the culprits would be found and punished.
As well as a court martial they could face prosecution for war crimes as the
Geneva Convention prohibits the desecration of enemy remains.
