AN interstate manhunt has led to the South Australian arrest of a man accused of stabbing an elderly pensioner to death in NSW.
Victim Dennis Griffin, 62, was known by locals in Waratah as a generous money lender, and police have speculated that his warm heart may have led to him opening the door to his killer, AdelaideNow reported.
South Australian police arrested a 48-year-old man inside a hotel in Mount Gambier last Thursday, but this was not made public until NSW police extradited him to Sydney last night.
The body Mr Griffin from Platt Street, Waratah, near Newcastle, was discovered inside his unit about 5pm on October 4, after neighbours became concerned for his welfare.
A neighbour is believed to have discovered the body more than 24 hours after his death from multiple stab wounds.
Mr Griffin had a reputation for lending money to people in need, despite being of little financial status himself, and investigators believe he may have known his attacker.
The 48-year-old extradited from South Australia arrived at Sydney Airport about 10.45pm and was quickly taken to Mascot police station, where he was charged with one count of murder.
