The son of a woman who disappeared in southern Queensland says news that a man has been charged with her murder is a weight off his shoulders.
A 58-year-old man was charged on Friday with murdering Gail Lynch, 55, who disappeared from Warwick on July 3.
When asked on Friday if Ms Lynch’s former partner Ian Hannaford, 58, was the prime suspect in the case, Detective Inspector Darren Shadlow said he was “the only person of interest in relation to the homicide investigation”.
Police said Mr Hannaford was being treated for exposure in hospital after being discovered by a security guard in the toilet blocks of a Toowoomba park on Thursday.
He had been “living rough” in a large concrete pipe, without any warm clothing and only ventured out at night.
Officers say he was covered in small cuts and barely conscious when he was found.
Police say he hadn’t been seen since they questioned him two weeks ago over Ms Lynch’s disappearance.
Ms Lynch’s body has yet to be found.
Her son Simon Hutchison questioned why Mr Hannaford had gone off the radar.
“For him to simply just vanish, why, why did he? Why did he go? And hopefully we’ll get those answers soon,” he told the Seven Network.
When told a person has been charged, Mr Hutchison said it was like a “weight lifted from my shoulders”.
“Now we’re just one step closer to bringing mum home,” he said.
The man charged over the murder is due in the Toowoomba Magistrate’s Court on Saturday.
