Man shot in knee in ‘targeted attack’

A 20-year-old man is being treated for a gunshot wound to his knee in what police believe was a targeted attack in Sydney’s south.

Emergency services were called to a park in Eastlakes in southern Sydney just after 6pm (AEST) on Wednesday where they found the man with the gunshot wound.

He was taken to hospital in a stable condition.

Police said they believe the shooting was targeted and that a black sedan was seen leaving the scene.

Evans Avenue was blocked off between Dalby Place and Racecourse Place on Wednesday night as investigations continued.

The shooting is the 10th this month and the 77th this year, NSW Opposition Leader John Robertson said in a statement.

Mr Robertson said local police don’t have enough officers for day to day policing duties, let alone to deal with shootings.

“Our police are doing the best job they can, but the O’Farrell government is leaving them understaffed and under resourced,” he said.

“Barry O’Farrell promised to end the shootings plaguing Sydney streets but instead we have seen 77 shootings in this year alone on his watch and counting.”

Anyone with information about the incident should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
