A man will spend up to 27 years in jail for the stabbing murder of a Sydney businessman who was attacked as he lay in bed with his wife.
Fadi Shamoun, 29, was found guilty in March of killing 36-year-old Richard Carruthers in his Castle Hill home in the early hours of June 24, 2007.
Shamoun was also found guilty of maliciously wounding the victim’s wife, Phuong Nguyen, who managed to escape from the house, breaking her ankle.
Sentencing Shamoun in the NSW Supreme Court on Friday, Justice Geoffrey Bellew said blood splatter on the walls of the bedroom indicated Mr Carruthers died after a violent struggle.
“The attack upon Mr Carruthers was unprovoked and violent,” Judge Bellew said.
Mr Carruthers was fatally stabbed in the back, with the wound 13cm deep, causing a loss of blood and a collapsed lung.
Shamoun must serve a minimum non-parole period of 20 years and three months.
Taking into account time already served, he will be eligible for parole in 2029.
