Man points laser at police chopper

A man will face court accused of shining a laser light at a police helicopter while it was on a mission in Sydney’s southwest.

Polair was flying over the Leumeah area to help local police around midnight when the green laser light was shone from the ground into the cockpit on four separate occasions.

The Polair crew pinpointed the origin of the laser and directed officers on the ground to Bowers Place in Leumeah, where they arrested a 39-year-old man in the front yard of his house.

A laser pointer was found nearby.

The man will appear in Campbelltown Local Court on Wednesday charged with threatening the safety of an aircraft and using a prohibited weapon.

It’s the third incident involving lasers in as many days.

A laser was pointed at a packed passenger jet as it prepared to land at Sydney Airport on Sunday night.

And on Monday, a green laser was pointed at a petrol station at the junction of Port Hacking Road and The Kingsway, at Caringbah.

No one has been arrested over the earlier incidents.
