Man jumps in Yarra River after Burnley Tunnel rampage

A MAN fleeing the scene of a rampage in Melbourne’s Burnley Tunnel jumped into the Yarra River in a failed bid to elude police.

Police were called to the busy tunnel soon before 1.30pm after motorists reported a man smashing the windows of vehicles with an iron bar, moments after a crash.

Frantic motorists said they saw a man carrying a tyre lever and smashing cars caught up in the multi-vehicle accident.

In dramatic scenes, when police arrived, the man is believed to have fled across several lanes of traffic.

Ignoring temperatures that dipped as low as 10C, he climbed over a barrier and jumped into the river about 5m below.

Two police officers jumped into the river after the man and dragged him to the bank before arresting him and taking him to hospital, where he was last night receiving treatment for mild hypothermia.

A 41-year-old St Albans man was yesterday arrested by police.

Police were last night taking statements from people whose cars were damaged. Charges are likely to be laid.

Motorist Shannon Ma said he was driving through the tunnel when he saw a man smashing the windows of several vehicles.

“We were quite scared,” Mr Ma said.

Victoria Police spokeswoman Constable Nicole Poynton said several cars were damaged.

“When police arrived, the man ran and jumped into the river,” she said.
