A man has suffered only minor injuries after jumping from the fifth floor of a burning apartment building in Newcastle.
Police and fire crews were called to the unit at Hamilton South at 3.30am (AEST) on Saturday.
Fire and Rescue NSW spokesman Tom Morrison said the man fell 15 metres, but the plunge was cushioned by bushes.
“He had tried to escape from his deadlocked door but couldn’t do so,” Mr Morrison said.
“In something of a panic opened his window and leapt out.”
He suffered only minor injuries and smoke inhalation.
The fire has been extinguished and the cause is being investigated.
