A man has been jailed over a brawl in which people were injured by bottles and a machete outside a Sudanese beauty pageant.
James Makur, 22, of Keilor Downs, pleaded guilty to one count each of affray, intentionally causing injury and criminal damage over the brawl at Braybrook in Melbourne’s west in April last year. He smashed a victim over the head with a bottle.
Several more serious charges against him were dropped.
In Melbourne Magistrates Court on Wednesday, Magistrate Charlie Rozencwajg said Makur and others in his group had driven around with a boot-full of weapons and used them over a minor matter.
“These charges represent a very serious form of criminal violence and unfortunately violence that is all to common in this community and violence that is resorted to all too readily by people as young as yourself,” the magistrate said.
“This was, for your community, a very festive and joyous occasion and it now will be looked back on by your community as something that you have placed a stain on by the behaviour of you and your fellow group.”
Mr Rozencwajg said it was relevant that one of the victims attacked during the affray, by another member of the group, suffered extremely serious injuries inflicted by a machete.
He said Makur came from a good family. His siblings were successful and had achieved academically, but Makur had taken a different path.
Makur presented a risk of re-offending because he had difficulty accepting responsibility for his part in the attack, the magistrate said.
He was sentenced to three months’ jail and a two-year community corrections order requiring him to complete 200 hours of community work and adhere to a curfew.
He was also fined $1,500.
His lawyer, David Gibson, said Makur would appeal against the sentence.
