Man in hospital under guard after chase

A 34-year-old suspected armed robber is under guard in a Brisbane hospital after being shot three times in the leg by police.

The man was airlifted by helicopter to Princess Alexandra Hospital on Friday night with gunshot wounds to his arm and leg.

He was shot when police used a tyre deflation device to stop his car near Killarney, southwest of Brisbane, following a lengthy chase.

Police wanted to question him about a number of armed robberies in southeast Queensland.

A 29-year-old woman passenger in the car is in custody and has been charged with one count of armed robbery.

Police say they began following the car at Aratula, 75km northeast of Killarney, and stopped it at about 9.30pm (AEST).

“In the circumstances that followed, a man in the vehicle was shot by police,” a police statement said.

It will be alleged the man was armed with a gun.

The woman was taken to Warwick Hospital as a precaution and later released.

She was expected to appear in the Toowoomba Magistrates Court on Saturday in connection with an armed robbery in Brisbane on July 23.

A police officer who suffered an injured wrist during the arrest is being treated at Ipswich Hospital.

The incident will be investigated by the Queensland Police Ethical Standards Command, which investigates all shootings by force members.
