Man hurt in torching his house: police

A Sydney man who allegedly started a fire in his house after an argument with his partner sustained severe burns to his head and hand, police say.

The ensuing blaze gutted the house.

The 55-year-old is to face a Parramatta court on Saturday to answer charges including common assault and damage property by fire/explosive.

Police said the man had argued with his 41-year-old female partner at their home on Boundary Road, Chester Hill, in Sydney’s southwest.

They alleged he splashed fuel inside the house and ignited it, and in doing so suffered severe burns to his hand and head.

“Both he and the woman managed to get out of the house, which was gutted by fire,” a police statement said.

“The woman was not hurt during the incident but was taken to Auburn Hospital suffering from shock.”

The man was taken to Liverpool hospital, then transferred to the burns unit at Concord Hospital.
