Man flees after trying to rob Sydney bank

A gunman is on the run after attempting to rob a bank in Sydney.

A masked man wearing a fluoro-yellow hooded jacket entered the bank on Coxs Road, North Ryde, and threatened staff with a firearm just after 9am (AEST) on Friday.

He fled empty-handed a short time later and was last seen jumping a fence and running towards Cooney Street.

Police from Gladesville Local Area Command have secured the scene, which will be examined by forensics officers.

Local detectives are speaking with witnesses in a bid to locate and identify the offender, who was described as being 175cm tall with a thin to medium build.

At the time of the incident, he was wearing grey tracksuit pants, white sneakers and dark-coloured gloves, with a bandana concealing his face, police said.
