Man faints on top of Sydney Harbour Bridge

Specialist paramedics have winched a man down from the top of the Sydney Harbour Bridge after he fainted while on the BridgeClimb tourist attraction.

An ambulance spokesman said the man, aged in his 60s had gone up the bridge as part of the BridgeClimb in which guides take climbers to the top of the Sydney icon, 134 metres above the harbour.

The spokesman said the man appeared to have suffered a medical condition unrelated to his experience on the climb.

“Basically he got there and he didn’t feel too well, he had low blood pressure,” the spokesman said.

The man was lowered from the top of the bridge in a metal cage and was now recovering in St Vincents Hospital.

BridgeClimb Spokesman Ed Owens said it was an unusual event for someone to have to be winched down from the bridge, although “every now and then someone faints”.

A spokeswoman later said BridgeClimb statistics showed one in 50,000 people fainted during a climb.
