The NSW’s Christmas holiday road toll has risen to four after a man died when he crashed his car into a tree near Tamworth on Christmas morning.
The man was driving north along the New England Highway, about 10km north of Wallabadah, when he crashed into a tree at about 10.30am (AEDT) on Sunday.
A passing motorist stopped and attempted to give him first aid while he was trapped inside but the man died at the scene.
The man, believed to be aged in his 20s, is yet to be formally identified.
The fatality was the fourth deaths in NSW during the Christmas road toll period, and brings the national total up to 11.
Assistant Commissioner John Hartley said the loss of a life on the road was particularly sad at Christmas.
“Again we have seen how quickly lives can be taken on our roads and I urge motorists, riders and pedestrians to take extra care,” assistant commissioner Hartley said in statement.
“It is far more important that you make it to your gathering a little late than not make it at all.
“In a moment a tragedy can occur, and sadly, many people will feel the repercussions of the death of a loved one.
“Put your headlights and seatbelts on, drive to the prevailing road and weather conditions and allow yourself sufficient time to react to what is ahead of you on the road.”
NSW Police have conducted a total of 74,692 breath tests and charged 104 motorists with drink-driving offences in 2011 compared to 66,831 tests and 183 charges for the same period in 2010.
Police caught 1668 motorists speeding up from 1299 for this time last year and issued 2822 infringements for other traffic offences up from 2271 last year.
