A FAMILY has been left devastated and in shock after a flood hero and SES volunteer was killed in a freak accident at Theodore fire station overnight.

Twenty-eight year-old Matt Stevens was untying a tow rope from behind a fire truck when it accidentally reversed over him around 6.30pm.

“They thought everyone was clear,” his father Bill Stevens said.

“Death was instantaneous – at least that is something.”

Mr Stevens said his other son Tim was a member of the Theodore fire brigade and Matt regularly volunteered at the station.

“He and his brother were each other’s left and right hand,” he said.

“We can’t get in touch with Tim at the moment, he is devastated.”

Matt was married to Jess, also an SES volunteer, who is in severe shock after the death of her husband. The couple had no children.

“She is very distressed and hasn’t slept all night,” Mr Stevens said.

Matt Stevens and his wife were heavily involved in helping the community during the floods.

“They did a lot of the organising work and administration here at the station,” Theodore SES Group Leader Barry Denning said.

Mr Denning said the brothers and family were “very helpful people”.

“If ever there was a problem they (the brothers) would show up to lend a hand,” Mr Denning said.

Queensland Fire and Rescue Service Acting Commissioner Iain MacKenzie is on his way to Theodore to visit with firefighters and family of those involved this morning.

Workplace Health and Safety is investigating.
