Man dies after Melbourne police chase

A 20-second police chase of a stolen car ended in a devastating crash, killing a young man and sending the driver to hospital.

Police were called about 3.50am (AEDT) on Tuesday about a car driving erratically in Dandenong in Melbourne’s southeast and sent a divisional van to the area.

Acting Assistant Commissioner Kevin Casey said “tragic circumstances” then unfolded as the police van activated its lights and tried to pull the vehicle over, only resulting in the car accelerating and speeding away.

It appeared that the car, a red Mitsubishi, mounted the kerb before a railing penetrated the passenger side.

Mr Casey said it was about “20 seconds” from the time the police notified they were in pursuit until they reported an accident had occurred.

The driver, a man believed to be in his 20s, was taken to Dandenong hospital with minor injuries.

Police have yet to speak to him.

Mr Casey said it’s not yet known how fast the stolen car was travelling when it crashed, though it was in excess of the speed limit.

The road where the crash occurred is listed as an 80km/h zone.

The Victoria Police Ethical Standards Department will oversee the investigation and the state coroner has visited the scene to conduct its own investigation.
