Man believed dead in Brisbane unit fire

A man is believed to have died and a woman is seriously injured after a fire in a two-storey unit on Brisbane’s south side.

The fire broke out in the unit on Persse Road, Runcorn about 9.50pm (AEST) on Tuesday and took fire crews 30 minutes to contain, the Department of Community Safety (DCS) says.

The 43-year-old woman is in Royal Brisbane Hospital with serious but not life-threatening injuries.

“She sustained serious burns to her legs, arms and hands,” the DCS says.

There are reports the woman jumped to safety from a second-level window.

A man remains unaccounted for. Emergency services have been unable to enter the unit – one of 34 in the complex – because it is structurally unsound.

The roof and a large part of the ceiling have collapsed.

Police were guarding the flat on Wednesday morning but scientific officers had yet to arrive to examine the scene.

The fatal fire follows the house fire on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast on Boxing Day which claimed four lives.

Celebrity chef Matt Golinksi is fighting for his life in hospital at Tewantin after his home was engulfed in fire early on Monday morning.

Police have said there was nothing suspicious about the blaze, which claimed the lives of Mr Golinski’s wife Rachel and daughters Starlia, Sage and Willow.
