A 23-year-old man has been arrested after crime spree on a southeast Queensland island left two buildings destroyed by fire and a woman in hospital with facial injuries.
Several nearby homes had to be evacuated during the incident, which involved five men, police say.
The group allegedly lit a fire in a swamp area on North Stradbroke Island, off Brisbane’s coast, about 2.30am (AEST) on Saturday, before breaking into a classroom and setting it alight.
Police say the five men then broke into a nearby post office about 3.20am and entered an adjoining residence.
They then demanded money from a woman inside the property before assaulting her, setting fire to the post office and running away with some cash.
The woman was taken to Dunwich Hospital with facial injuries and concussion.
The post office and adjoining house were destroyed, while the classroom sustained smoke damage.
A man has been charged with arson and “other related offences”, police say.
He will appear in Cleveland Magistrates Court on Monday.
Police are still interviewing four other men.
