Man arrested in ’79 Patz case sent for psych exam

NEW YORK (AP) — The man accused of murdering a six-year-old boy in one of New York City‘s most notorious missing child cases was taken to a hospital for a psychological evaluation.

A law enforcement official told The Associated Press that Pedro Hernandez was checked out by doctors early Friday at Bellevue Hospital. The official wasn’t authorized to speak publicly about the investigation and spoke on the condition of anonymity.

Hernandez is scheduled to be arraigned later in the day in the 1979 slaying of Etan Patz (AY’-tahn PAYTS’). The boy vanished while on his way to his bus stop in New York City.

Police say Hernandez has confessed to killing the child.

Friday marks the 33rd anniversary of his disappearance. The date is now recognized as National Missing Children’s Day.
