A 29-year-old Canning Vale man is in hospital after his car exploded following a suspected arson attack.

Sergeant Gerry Cassidy said the man went to investigate noises outside his home on Dennis Way at 3am, and found his Nissan Navara ute on fire across the road from his house.

He tried to put the fire out but as he got close to the vehicle it exploded.

He suffered serious burns to his face and upper body, and was taken to Royal Perth Hospital where he was placed in an induced coma.

He is now in a serious but stable condition.

Police are investigating whether the fire was linked to a second car fire about 400m away. The second car was completely destroyed.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

In a separate incident, detectives are investigating an arson attack on a car workshop in Malaga last night.

An accelerant was thrown through the front windows of the Camboon Road business just after 10pm last night.

A group of people in the area noticed the fire and attempted to extinguish it. Fire crews were notified and put out the blaze.

The estimated damage was between $20,000 and $30,000.
