Mali appeals for help as Islamists attack ancient Timbuktu

Diallo Fadima Toure, the Malian culture minister, will today issue a formal
appeal for an end to the destruction of Timbuktu’s monuments. She will do so
from St Petersburg where the World Heritage Committee is holding its annual
meeting. This body has already added Timbuktu to its list of sites at risk
of destruction.

Timbuktu became a World Heritage Site because its monuments were judged to be
of “outstanding universal value,” said a spokesman for Unesco. “All that is
put into a sad perspective when you see what is going on there now,” he
added.

Timbuktu possesses three great mosques – those of Djingareyber, Sankore and
Sidi Yahya. While the latter has been vandalised, the fate of the first two
is unclear. The mosque of Djingareyber is the oldest of the trio, dating
from 1325.

The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, an alliance of 57 largely Muslim
countries, “deplored” the actions of the “bigoted extremists” of Ansar Dine,
saying the monuments singled out for attack were “part of the rich Islamic
heritage of Mali”.

The OIC statement urged all “appropriate steps for the protection and
preservation of the historical sites”.

However, Mali’s government lost control of Timbuktu and a vast swathe of the
country to the extremists almost three months ago. Until that changes,
little can be done to halt the pillage.
