Maldives president clears way for early elections to end violence

India now appears to have moved towards Mr Nasheed’s position and built support for new elections which could be held as early as July if Mr Waheed is assured of an end to street protests.

Indian officials confirmed on Thursday that its foreign secretary was dispatched to the Maldives following indications that elections could be called earlier than 2013 under the constitution.

Mr Nasheed’s brother and confidante Ibrahim today told The Daily Telegraph that India’s foreign secretary Ranjan Mathai had held talks with all sides throughout the day on Wednesday. “In principle they [the government] has agreed to early elections and the Indians brokered the deal. The MDP is pushing for elections within four to six months. There are two dates – July 26th and November 11th for a new government to be in place. The elections could be earlier in July,” he said.

Mr Waheed confirmed elections could be held before they are due in October 2013 if calm returns to the islands.

“At the moment, the election is scheduled for late 2013, more than a year and a half from now. If we agree to bring it forward we will have a discussion with all political parties, but the conditions have to be right to ensure there will be free and fair elections,” Mr Waheed told the news agency Reuters.

“We need to make sure that there is continuation of peace. It is really important to bring back confidence and create rule of law,” he said.

Mr Nasheed suggested domestic pressure had played a part in the new president’s concession and said an agreement with the opposition DRP party, which once backed autocratic former president Abdul Gayoom, had been reached to call for elections. The two parties combined have more than 50 of the parliament’s 75 seats – “enough to impeach the president,” he said.
