nsnbc : Malaysian Ambassador in Indonesia Datuk Seri Zahrain Mohamed said Malaysians arriving in Bali on holiday students and people with business on the Indonesian island are advised to contact the office of the Malaysian Honorary Consul in Bali or the Malaysian Embassy in Jakarta to inform of their whereabouts in case of an emergency due to the current ‘high warning alert’ status of the Mount Agung volcano.
The Malaysian Ambassador stressed that citizens should contacts the Honorary Consulate in Bali or the Malaysian Embassy in the Indonesian capital Jakarta as soon as possible. He stressed that information on the whereabouts of Malaysians on the island as necessary to enable the Consulate or Embassy to contact them in case of an emergency if needed. Bali is a globally renown tourist destination and thousands of Malaysians and citizens from other neighboring countries are there at any given time.
Indonesian authorities issued a highest alert warning for the Mt Agung volcano. Indonesian volcanologists and geologists fear that that the volcano may erupt violently after it has largely been dormant for half a century. Tlast – deadly – eruption happened in 1963 and caused the death of more than 1,000 people.
There has been a marked increase in the number and magnitude of earthquakes on, under and around the mountain. Indonesian volcanologists registered more than 800 earthquakes within 24 hours.
Indonesian authorities evacuated the surrounding area around the volcano. There have been set up road signs to help people find safe areas, avoid dangerous areas, and to find safe roads. People have also been advised to adhere strictly to advise issue by authorities, get surgical masks, and make other preparations. Indonesian authorities also stressed that Bali is safe for tourists provided they adhere to advise and warnings.
Ambassador Datuk Seri Zahrain Mohamed said the Embassy and Consulate were constantly monitoring the situation and in contact with Malaysians in Bali, especially students, expatriates and tourists. “The embassy has also informed Malaysian students in Bali to take the necessary measures,” he told the State-run Malaysian news agency Bernama. Students staying within a 12-km radius of the volcano have also been advised to move to a safer ground, he stressed.
Zahrain also suggested that Bali-bound Malaysian aircraft make a public announcement for its Malaysian passengers to inform the consulate of their whereabouts upon arriving on the resort island. The local media, on September 30, reported that more than 200,000 people have been evacuated to safer ground since the volcano began emitting thick smoke.
