Major quake rocks Papua New Guinea

The quake, which occurred at 7:13 am on Thursday local time (2113 GMT Wednesday), struck the New Britain region of Papua New Guinea at a depth of 48 kilometers (30 miles).

The quake-hit area is situated 598 kilometers (371.5 miles) from Papua New Guinea’s capital Port Moresby.

No reports of possible damages have yet been made.

Papua New Guinea sits on the so-called “Pacific Ring of Fire,” a hotspot for seismic activity due to friction between tectonic plates.

Earthquake activity is common in the island country, but only few of them prove destructive.

Papua New Guinea’s houses are mostly built out of wood, and have a very high degree of resistance against earthquakes.
