‘Majlis pursues Myanmar Muslim killings’

Iran’s “Majlis (parliament) seriously pursues the issue of the savage killings of Muslims in Myanmar, which is being carried out with the silence of the public opinion and media,” Morteza Hosseini, a member of the Majlis Cultural Committee, said on Saturday.

The Iranian lawmaker slammed the inaction and silence of the human rights bodies and international organizations regarding the issue as an indication of their support for the arrogant powers that are seeking to crack down on those nations who resist against them.

He called on the Iranian Foreign Ministry to follow the issue through the international channels.

According to recent reports, Muslims in Myanmar are in a tragic human plight. Reports say 650 of the nearly one million Rohingya Muslims were killed as of June 28 during clashes in Myanmar. This is while 1,200 others are missing and 80,000 more have been displaced.

The UN has described Rohingya Muslims as one of the most persecuted minorities in the world.

They are deprived of basic rights including education and employment and are subject to forced labor, extortion and other coercive measures.

The government of Myanmar refuses to recognize Rohingyas, who it claims are not natives, and classifies them as illegal migrants, although they have lived in the country for generations.
