NORTH Melbourne’s Sudanese-born rookie Majak Daw has declined an invitation to meet the Queen, in favour of pre-season training commitments.
The 20-year-old, yet to play an AFL game, was initially stunned on Wednesday to receive the invitation, tweeting: ”Why on earth would she want to meet me?”
”I’m overwhelmed to be invited to such a prestigious event and have the opportunity to meet the Queen,” the 195-centimetre budding ruckman told the Kangaroos’ website.
”It’s an honour because an invitation like this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”
But despite his enthusiasm, Daw will have to skip the reception, to be hosted by Victorian Governor Alex Chernov, as he will be at a US training camp with his North teammates.
”I am flying out on Friday for our pre-season camp in Utah, so won’t be able to make it,” Daw said yesterday.
Daw, who moved to Australia with his family in 2003, has spent two seasons with the Kangaroos and last week signed for another two years.
■THE Western Bulldogs will receive a third-round national draft selection as compensation for losing Sam Reid to Greater Western Sydney.
The Bulldogs have until November 11 to decide if they want to use the pick in this year’s draft, to be held in Sydney on November 24.
If not, they can use it in any year until 2015, with the pick to be taken after their existing third-round choice.
Reid, who played only 10 senior games in four years for the Bulldogs, as he constantly battled injury, was recruited last week by the Giants.
He was the second Bulldog taken by the expansion club after they poached young gun midfielder Callan Ward, for which the Dogs, who had battled desperately to keep him, received a first-round pick.
■New Collingwood coach Nathan Buckley’s first game in charge will be against Hawthorn on Friday, March 30 at the MCG. The Brisbane Lions and Melbourne will also play in round one, with new Demon Mitch Clark getting an early look at his former teammates the next day, also at the MCG. The 2012 fixture will be released next Friday.
