Changes will be made to the maintenance cycle for the Navy’s Collins-class submarines to keep more in service.

The Federal Government said the change was a key recommendation of the Coles review.

It means up to four of the six submarines will be available for service at any time.

The current maintenance cycle means only two to three are available.

The Government will put $65 million towards the first stage of updating ship control systems for the submarines.

The work will be done by defence companies ASC and Saab Systems in Adelaide.
