Lying to Qld parliament to be illegal

Lying to Queensland parliament will be a criminal offence under new laws to be drafted by the Liberal National Party.

Attorney-General Jarrod Bleijie said the state government would amend the Queensland Criminal Code to re-enact laws which had been repealed under the Labor.

In 2006, Labor changed the criminal code to remove lying to parliament.

Instead, those who lied were only guilty of contempt of parliament.

Labor changed the law as it dealt with allegations that then-minister for health, Gordon Nuttall, misled a Parliamentary Estimates Committee over his prior knowledge of problems with overseas-trained doctors.

Mr Nuttall was only penalised by being forced to apologise and resign as minister and as a member of the Executive Council.

Mr Bleijie said reintroducing the relevant section of the Criminal Code would enhance the parliament’s reputation.

“Allowing the courts to deal with such conduct guards against any suspicions of political interference and cronyism,” he said in a statement.
