nsnbc : Speaking at a military parade on the occasion of Belarus’ Independence Day on July 3, President Alexander Lukashenko stressed that Belarus, since its independence, has not allowed itself to be drawn into reckless political undertakings.

Lukashenko noted that the main areas for the country’s development for the next five years have been approved at the recent 5th Belarusian People’s Congress. He added that this nationwide forum demonstrated the country’s social cohesion, peaceful and multitrack policy based on principles of good neighborliness and cooperation. Lukashenko added:
“We have been closely cooperating with our allies and, first of all, with our sister nation Russia. We have been developing dialogue with neighbors and western countries. … Over the years of independence we have not gotten drawn into any reckless political schemes, any international conflict. We are looking into the future with confidence and cherish the glorious history of our country…. Let us forever cherish the memory of the heroes who died defending our Fatherland. Let us live up to their great feat. I wish everyone peace, happiness, health and every success for the benefit of our Motherland. Eternal glory to the Belarusian people who defended the freedom and independence of the country. Long live our Motherland, the Republic of Belarus. Eternal glory to its valiant Armed Forces. Happy Independence Day!”
The country’s policy based on avoiding what Lukashenko described as reckless political undertakings has over the past two years been demonstrated by key factors. Belarus became a founding member of the recently established Eurasian Economic Union (EEU). While Belarus supports the EEU project, Lukashenko also stressed that the EEU needs to implement tangible policies and initiatives that show that it’s not merely a club for “talks”. Simultaneously, Belarus significantly improved its relations with the European Union (EU) as a whole and several of its constituent States in particular.
Most noteworthy with regard to avoiding “reckless political undertakings” is that Belarus played a key role in bringing about and in hosting the Minsk Talks about the conflict in Ukraine within the so-called Normandy Four format.t were these talks, hosted by Belarus, with participation of Ukraine, Russia, France and Germany, with the exclusion of the UK and USA, that resulted in the ceasefire agreement and the Minsk I and Minsk II accords about Ukraine.
