A combination of low crime, sunshine and high earnings have made a little-known corner of Hampshire the best place to live in Britain.
The district of Hart replaces Elmbridge in Surrey, which has held the top spot for the past three years.
The accolade is awarded by the Halifax, whose researchers compare every aspect of life in the country’s 405 local authority districts.

As well as crime, salaries and hours of sunshine, factors such as house prices, broadband availability, life expectancy and general health are considered.
‘Across a range of indicators, the residents of Hart enjoy the best quality of life in the UK,’ said Martin Ellis of the Halifax. Elmbridge, which is on the edge of Greater London and includes towns such as Claygate, Esher, Oxshott and Weybridge, is at second place in the survey.
Hart District Council’s area has a population of only 91,000. Average full-time earnings are £841 a week, which is £235 more than the typical Briton.
Residents are very unlikely to get burgled. The area has one of the lowest crime rates in the country, with just 14 break-ins per 10,000 people a year.
The average rainfall is 746mm a year, compared with 882mm across the whole country, and the district benefits from an extra three hours of sunshine a week compared with the national average.
More than 90 per cent have a good level of broadband access and 95 per cent are in ‘good or fairly good’ health.
Predictably, therefore, moving there is not cheap. The average house price in the area is £314,005, which is nearly double the average price in Britain of £161,731. A spokesman for Hart District Council said many who live in the area are commuters, travelling into London or Basingstoke.
The journey from Fleet, the council’s best-known town, into Waterloo Station takes less than an hour, with trains taking as little as 44 minutes to get into the capital.
The area also includes the large village of Hartley Wintney.
One of the area’s most famous residents was Charles Kingsley, who wrote Westward Ho! He is buried in a graveyard in the village of Eversley.
Ideal home: A £4million home in Oxshott which is in the borough of Elmbridge, Surrey, which was finally toppled from first place in the list
It is also the location of the Duke of Wellington’s home of Stratfield Saye, the family’s seat since the first Duke bought it in 1817 following his victory at the Battle of Waterloo.
The council’s website describes it a ‘picturesque area of gentle rolling wooded countryside, which takes its name from the River Hart flowing through its centre’.
Such tranquil qualities may be less appealing to the residents of Brentwood, the Essex district which ranks in fifth place.
The town is the location of reality TV show The Only Way is Essex, which is famous for its tanning salons, manicure hot spots and Minnie’s Boutique.
