Kent Minault from the Sierra Club said nearly 40 percent of Los Angeles is powered by two coal plants, which are causing significant harm to the global climate.
“If we’re going to get off coal, we have to make up the difference in two ways, renewable and efficiency. Efficiency is really probably the most important of those two because it can come in faster and it’s the cheapest,” Minault told Press TV.
A new study from the University of California at Los Angeles showed that greenhouse gas emissions are going to significantly increase the state’s temperature over the next few years.
The emissions, in large part, come from California’s cars and coal power needs. To help curb the emissions, Los Angeles is moving to support standards set by the Environmental Protection Agency to limit the city’s reliance on coal.
The Beyond Coal Campaign said the standard marks the first time in human history that carbon pollution will be regulated.
According to environmental groups, Los Angeles has the opportunity to guide the nation into a cleaner and more sustainable future as the country’s second largest city.
