Lord Monson claims son was murdered in Kenyan police custody

“If the police who committed this crime had been honest and had not
delayed in taking Alexander to hospital, he might still be alive.

“They are guilty of a beating up, they are guilty of being dishonest to
medical staff and moreover they have smeared my son’s name.” Lord
Monson, an Old Etonian journalist, said that he was looking forward to a
thorough investigation into his claims of police brutality by the Kenyan
authorities.

“From what I understand there are some good people in government and they
must be given their opportunity and their chance to carry out investigations
and to carry out a proper inquest,” he said.

“In the event that I see no movement on this, I will of course bring a
private prosecution. I will not stop.”

He confirmed his willingness to sue the Kenyan government amid an apparent
continued failure by local police to investigate his son’s death.

Alexander was arrested outside a Diani nightclub at 2am on June 19 and charged
with possession of cannabis.

He was taken to the town’s police station in good health but was rushed
unconscious the following morning to hospital, where he died.

A post-mortem showed he had suffered massive internal bleeding and had a blood
clot on the brain.

Lord Monson said that no officer from Kenya’s police had interviewed him, or
even offered condolences for his son’s death while in their custody.

“I had hoped the police might have come to see me to express their
condolences and their sorrow, even if they were going to be persisting in
this ridiculous story that they have been putting out that he died of drugs,”
he said.

“We all know this not to be true, they know it not to be true. And yet
even when we have the post-mortem report they continue with this pack of
lies.”

His son is expected to be cremated this week. A police spokesman refused to
comment on Lord Monson’s allegations, which have consistently been denied by
senior officers.
