I don’t know about you, but I’ve read countless conscious”self-help” books in an attempt to learn more about myself, how I react, my emotions, and how to continue growing on this never-ending path towards enlightenment. Sometimes it’s an information overload and I completely give up and turn my back on any thing that is even remotely “new agey.”
What I have found, however, is that there can be just as much insight hidden within the pages of many different fiction books that tell very insightful and enlightening stories. It can be fun to escape and get completely lost in these stories, not even realizing that you are learning something profound until you are done. With that being said, here is my list of favourite fiction books offering some spiritual or conscious insight.
1. The Alchemist – Paulo Coelho
This is a story about one boy’s journey to discovering his own Personal Legend, which we all have. This is your purpose for incarnating in this body on this planet at this time. This is what you are meant to do and to share your own unique gift to the world. Written by well-known author, Paulo Coelho, over 25 years ago.
This book didn’t become a success until a few years ago when finally, word of mouth alone had brought this story to millions. Coelho believes that this book is his masterpiece and that his own Personal Legend is being an author. This story is an easy read, insightful, compelling and light-hearted, it’s easy to see why this book has become a New York Times bestseller and stayed there for more than 350 consecutive weeks.
2. The Celestine Prophecy – James Redfield
Following the adventure of one man through Peru and the insights and wisdom he gained on this trip during his fast paced adventure. This book was truly profound to me and while reading it I was able to physically see energy for the first time. It assisted me on my own process of awakening. Offering concepts from Eastern and new age philosophy, this book is an insightful and spiritual gift that is sure to expand your awareness and inspire you.
3. Shantaram – Gregory David Roberts
This is the longest book I ever read, but once I started, I knew that I wouldn’t be able to put it down. The story of a man who escaped from a prison in Australia and became a fugitive in the most spiritual place in the world – India. Having to give up everything from his previous life in exchange for freedom he changes his name and takes on a new identity. The places he sees, the friends he makes, the adventures he has, are truly inspiring and sure to bring tears to your eyes.

Gregory David Roberts is an amazing author, capable of capturing the raw emotions through his words in such a beautiful way. This is apparently a true story that was written 3 times, once being burned in a fire, and another time being taken away by a prison guard, this is a story that Roberts wanted to make sure he got out, especially if it’s true.
4. Ishmael – Daniel Quinn

Apply in person.” The nameless narrator and protagonist begins his story, telling how he first reacted to this ad with scorn because of the absurdity of “wanting to save the world,” a notion he had felt once he fully embraced himself as an adolescent during the counterculture movement of the 1960’s. Then the story of man communicating in-depth with a Gorilla – Ishmael, beings. It examines the mythical thinking driving modern civilization, and the relationship of this world-view to ethics, sustainability, and global catastrophe.
