‘London’s security calculations flawed’

The members of the joint parliamentary committee on national security said the collapse of the eurozone and the possibility of Scottish independence simply do not appear to concern the National Security Council, which has the Prime Minister, senior cabinet members and spy agencies chiefs as its members.

The committee said London is also miscalculating how reliable its allies would be in case of future conflicts and specifically with regard to the US, which committee members said, could turn its back to its European allies to seek its interests in Asia, even if it means entering new conflicts.

“We call on the government to reflect deeply on the long-term implications of the geographical and functional shifts in US policy that are now taking place. It raises fundamental questions if our pre-eminent defense and security relationship is with an ally who has interests which are increasingly divergent from our own,” the committee said.

The committee attacked the government for overlooking the developments in the world, including in Scotland, saying the National Security Council has an “unrealistic” take on global affairs.

“The government’s national security strategy simultaneously recognizes the rise of new global powers, shifts in the centers of economic activity, and reduced resources in the UK, while at the same time asserting ‘no reduction in influence’. This is wholly unrealistic,” the committee said.

The warning follows London’s 2011 military cooperation agreement with its centuries-old military rival, France, as both sides looked to cut costs.

After Britain announced it will scrap its aircraft carriers in line with the defense cuts, it emerged that Britain and France are to share French aircraft carriers.

There were also reports at the time that their cooperation could also expand to sharing nuclear submarines and military satellites.

This is while the recent eurozone crisis and the related disputes between London and Paris, including open verbal exchanges between British and French leaders, have cast a shadow on the reliability of such partnerships to provide Britain with its needed security.
