nsnbc : Six people have been killed and 48 injured when a group of attackers in a van mowed down pedestrians on London Bridge and then stabbed people in a busy area nearby. Police is treating the incident as a terrorist attack. Police reported they shot dead three men, who they believe were the only people directly involved in the incident.
Although the deadly incident is treated as a terrorist attack, police has not yet established a political motive or attributed responsibility beyond reasonable doubt. prime Minister Theresa May returned to her residence in Downing Street Saturday night after the incident. May has called for a meeting of the so-called Cobra emergency committee Sunday morning.
The Prime Minister described the incident Saturday night as dreadful while Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn described it as brutal and shocking. The incident happened amidst election campaigns in the country. The Conservative Party said on Sunday morning they were suspending campaigning for next Thursday’s general election. Other parties could follow suit.
The incident happened less than two weeks after a suicide bomber – with known ties to Libyan Islamists and murky ties to British intelligence – killed 22 people at a concert in Manchester, and less than three months after a lone attacker drove into pedestrians on Westminster Bridge, killing four, and stabbed a police officer to death in the Palace of Westminster.
Mark Rowley, the Deputy Commissioner of the UK capital’s Metropolitan Police and Britain’s most senior anti-terrorism officer, told reporters police were called at 10.08pm on Saturday to an incident involving a white van hitting pedestrians on London Bridge before continuing on to the nearby crowded Borough Market.
He added that “The suspects then left the vehicle and a number of people were stabbed, including an on-duty British transport police officer who was responding to the incident at London Bridge. He received serious but not life-threatening injuries. … Armed officers responded very quickly and bravely, confronting three male suspects who were shot and killed in Borough Market. The suspects were wearing what looked like explosive vests but these were later established to be hoaxes.”
The fact that Deputy Commissioner Rowley said the apparent suicide belts turned out to be “hoaxes”, and the fact that the highly-trained police officers fatally shot all three suspects raises renewed questions, either about an apparent shoot to kill policy or apparent incompetence when it comes to shoot to incapacitate and to arresting alleged terrorists alive.
London Mayor Sadiq Khan denounced the incident as deliberate, cowardly, horrific and barbaric. Neither May, Corbyn or Khan made comments that would suggest that they were reflecting about the apparent shoot to kill issue that could develop into a dangerous trend that could seriously undermine core principles that have been considered as part of the foundation of constitutional states; The use of lest possible, necessary force by law enforcement, in an attempt to inflict least possible harm to suspects, the right to a fair and transparent trial, especially in cases that have the potential to be used to further limit civil liberties and fundamental constitutional rights.
That said, streets around London Bridge and Borough Market, fashionable districts packed with bars and restaurants, would have been busy with people on a Saturday night out. Witnesses described a white van careering into pedestrians near London Bridge and knocking over several people. “It looked like he was aiming for groups of people. I froze beacause I didn’t know what to do,” said Mark Roberts (53) a management consultant. Roberts said he saw at least six people on the ground after the van veered on and off the pavement. “It was horrendous,” he said.
Other witnesses told reporters that people ran into a bar to seek shelter. “People started running and screaming, and the van crashes into the railing behind. We went towards Borough Market and everyone went inside (the bar). Everyone in the bar started pushing people from the exits,” one witness who gave his name as Brian (32) said. The apparent consensus among policy makers and police is that the incident is linked to the so-called Islamic State, although there hasn’t been presented any verifiable evidence to support such claims.
Claims linking the incident to the Islamic State may be based on a message, attributed to Islamic State, sent out a call on instant messaging service Telegram early on Saturday urging its followers to launch attacks with trucks, knives and guns against “Crusaders” during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. A clearand verifiable link between the message and the Islamic State has not been established either.
