London cyclists protest mounting deaths

The protest, third of its kind organized by the London Cycling Campaign (LCC) was held last night with almost 5,000 riders, including families of victims and injured survivors, calling on the mayor to give them more space, British media reported.

According to Transport for London figures 14 cyclists lost their lives on the British capital’s roads last year, compared to 16 in 2011. The number of those seriously injured stood at 657, which was up from 555 in 2011. So far this year, six cyclists have died in London, the report said.

Protesters included guided rides from 20 different areas across the capital and individuals armed with bells, hooters, stereos and “space for cycling” flags.

“Some space has to be taken away from motor vehicles and given to cyclists. Some of the traffic would evaporate as more drivers turn into cyclists,” said wheelchair-bound John Hartley, who was injured in a road accident five weeks ago.

London Assembly member and former deputy mayor Jenny Jones was also among the protesters.

“We’re here to show we are a force to be reckoned with. We hear a lot about the money being spent but it’s not enough and it’s in too few places. We want more money and we want it now,” she said.
