Lockerbie witness to sue Crown Office

Edwin Bollier, the former chief at Swiss company Mebo who was accused by the Crown Office of making the timer for the Lockerbie bomb, revealed he was planning to take legal action against the Crown Office and Scottish police.

Bollier’s plan, that comes after Libya said that it might stop the British police from entering the country to probe the bombing, follows the critical evidence about a tiny piece of electrical circuit board found at the crash site in the Scottish town of Lockerbie.

During the Lockerbie trial at Camp Zeist in Netherlands, it was revealed that the piece came from an MST-13 timer made by Mebo.

Mebo said at the trial that it had sold 20 such timers to the Libyan officials in 1985, which turned into the major part of the case against Abdelbaset al-Megrahi, the only Libyan man convicted of the bombing.

Right after the trial, Mebo lost its major clients and went bankrupt, with Bollier insisting he has lost millions of pounds due to the trial.

However, Megrahi’s official biography written by John Ashton insisted that new evidence revealed the piece of circuit board found at Lockerbie was 100% covered in tin and did not match the ones in the timers sold to Libya. It also claimed the Crown Office’s forensic expert, Allen Feraday, knew of the contrast, but did not reveal the issue.

Bollier said he consulted lawyers in Switzerland and is in search of a lawyer in Britain to take his case. “It is now absolutely clear this fragment was not from a timer we delivered to Libya. We told the police in 1999 this was the case but they would not believe us. We lost our company and had to pay a big damages claim.”

The Lockerbie bombing targeted Pan American flight 103, which was heading to New York from London on Wednesday December 21, 1988. All 243 passengers and 16 crewmembers of the plane were killed in the incident.
