CRAIG Allen would have done anything to hear his son Luke wish him a happy Father’s Day yesterday.
Instead he was sitting in his Gold Coast home, his eyes were bloodshot and he was lost for words over how Luke died on Saturday night.
Luke, a bright and bubbly 23-year-old, died instantly when he fell 10m from a three-storey balcony in Cordelia St, South Brisbane, at 8pm on Saturday.
He started his evening like thousands of other people watching the Brisbane Riverfire fireworks display – having a few drinks with mates. “It was an accident, he just slipped,” Mr Allen told The Bulletin yesterday.
“He was drinking but we won’t know to what extent until the autopsy is done.
“I encourage parents to look after the children and talk to them about alcohol.”
Police have already finalised their investigations and are preparing a report for the coroner.
Luke’s sister Emily, 19, is currently on her way back from America where she plays basketball for Montana State University.
On Facebook she wrote of how proud she was of Luke.
“You were the one person who I would always look up to,” she said. “I guess heaven was needing a hero.”
Luke, who went to Coombabah State High School, moved to Brisbane last year from his family home in Parkwood to work for Education Queensland as a finance officer.
Mr Allen and his wife Julie are hoping to hold a funeral for Luke on Friday.
