The Liberal National Party’s has lost its second candidate in five weeks for the Gold Coast seat of Broadwater after complaints were made to the party’s head office.

The LNP offered little by way of explanation for the reason behind Cameron Caldwell’s disendorsement, which came just weeks after the party’s previous candidate, Richard Townson, was caught drink driving.

Mr Townson record a blood alcohol content of 0.07 in January, when he was caught in a police random breath test.

This afternoon, the LNP released a statement announcing Mr Caldwell’s dismissal.

Party executives were tight-lipped about the reasons and Mr Caldwell’s details had already been removed from the LNP’s website.

“You’ve got the statement, that’s all we’ll be saying,” a party spokesman said this afternoon.

The statement, issued in LNP state director Michael O’Dwyer’s name, says only that Mr Caldwell has been dumped after a complaint from a member of the public to a senior party official was upheld.

“Mr Caldwell was offered the chance to put forward his version of events, however the nature of these matters were at conflict with the standards of the LNP,” he said.

“The LNP believes that its candidates should uphold high standards of behaviour in line with community expectations and on this occasion those standards have not been met.”

Verity Barton, a resident of Coombabah and chair of the LNP’s Broadwater state electoral committee, was announced as the new candidate for Broadwater.

Mr Caldwell, who worked for a law firm on Hope Island, was originally recruited to the LNP by party president Bruce McIver, despite suggestions that LNP leader Campbell Newman wanted a woman to be chosen as the candidate.

Broadwater is held by Labor MP Peta-Kaye Croft with a narrow 2 per cent margin. Gold Coast mayor Ron Clarke is also set to contest the seat as an independent candidate.
