LNP MP Shane Knuth is quitting the party to join Bob Katter’s Australia Party, and more MPs may follow him.
The dissatisfaction of former Nationals MPs with the merged Liberal National Party is believed to behind the switch.
“I believe the LNP merger hasn’t been beneficial for rural and regional MPs,” he told the Sunday Mail.
“There’s quite a few (National MPs) unhappy… it’s gut-wrenching when you’re forced to vote on something you’re passionately against.”
He said the decision by the LNP not to support a moratorium on coal seam gas exploration on farming land helped him quit the party.
