LNP $9 million travel promise unfunded

Liberal National Party (LNP) leader Campbell Newman has refused to outline how he’ll pay for a $9 million plan to offer southeast Queenslanders free public transport.

Mr Newman has announced Go Card ticket-holders who travel on buses, trains, and ferries nine times in a week would travel free for the rest of the week under his plan.

The move would be an incentive to use public transport regularly to and from work, and help balance the household budget, he said.

It could save a regular weekday commuter to the CBD from Oxley or Mitchelton $220 a year, or a commuter travelling from Varsity Lakes or Palmwoods $667 each year.

“We think that’s putting real money back in people’s pockets,” Mr Newman said on Thursday.

The announcement follows the government’s commitment to make travel free after 10 trips in one week, which it estimates would cost $7 million a year in lost revenue.

Mr Newman called that plan a “sham” because most people only took 10 trips to and from work.

But the former Brisbane lord mayor, who said the plan would cost $9 million in lost revenue in the first year, would not reveal how an LNP government would pay for the scheme.

“All our election commitments, as you know, will be fully costed and independently audited and provided prior to the election for people to consider,” Mr Newman told reporters.

“There will be all sorts of things we will be committing to and reforms that we’ll be promising and they’ll need to be considered in an entirety prior to the election.”

The state election is due in March next year.

Treasurer Andrew Fraser said Mr Newman should be honest about where the funds would come from.

“Now he’s hiding what job cuts he’ll enforce or what taxes he’ll increase to pay for his promises,” Mr Fraser said.

“With his track record, he makes Milli Vanilli look honest and genuine.”
