The House Homeland Security Subcommittee on Transportation and Maritime Security holds a hearing in Washington at 10 a.m. ET on July 18, to examine the existing and future security threats in the Arctic Region and opportunities for the United States Coast Guard and the Department of Homeland Security to effectively respond and address these threats.
“As the sole operator of the U.S.’s polar icebreaker fleet, the U.S. Coast Guard has an immense responsibility in the Arctic to promote freedom of navigation and uphold U.S. sovereignty,” subcommittee chairman Rep. Carlos Gimenez (R-Fla.) said.
“This Subcommittee hearing is an important opportunity to hear from national security experts on ways the U.S. can deter threats and defend our interests in the Arctic as strategic competitors Russia and China explore growing economic and military opportunities in the region.”… Source
