High street lingerie chain La Senza plans to enter administration, the firm announced tonight.

Administrators could be appointed within the next 10 days, in accordance with the Insolvency Act, a spokeswoman said.

Models who have promoted the firm’s
lingerie include former Big Brother contestant Chantelle Houghton and
Hell’s Kitchen star Danielle Lineker.

A spokeswoman said: ‘Due to trading conditions in La Senza’s high street locations and the overall macro environment which are having an adverse effect on the company, the board of directors of La Senza has filed a notice of intention to appoint administrators.’

The business will continue to trade as normal in the meantime and there have been no unplanned redundancies or store closures.

The spokeswoman added: ‘For the avoidance of doubt, the company is not currently in administration, and no administrator has been appointed.

‘The company continues to work with KPMG to explore all options to safeguard the future of the company and its employees.

‘Further announcements will be made in due course.’

The firm was sold to private equity group Lion Capital five years ago by Dragons’ Den entrepreneur Theo Paphitis.

He told BBC Radio 5 live: ‘It’s sad because it’s a company that I used to consider was my baby back in the early 2000s and it’s sad to see it go off the high street.

‘But it’s a sign of the times I suppose.’

The news that the underwear retailers
plan to appoint administrators comes as retail guru Mary Portas warned
earlier this month that Britain has too many shops and thousands will have to close.

In a report commissioned by David
Cameron she produced 28 recommendations to halt the decline. She said
High Streets had reached ‘crisis point’ with the rise of super-malls,
out-of-town supermarkets and internet shopping.

The retailer warned town centres would never return to their traditional image of butcher, baker, greengrocer and fishmonger.

News
of La Senza’s difficulties follows the collapse of shoe retailer
Barratts last week and Blacks hoisting the ‘For Sale’ sign.

Peacocks is also looking to close an estimated 200 stores.

Carpetright
added to the gloom yesterday posting the worst first-half performance
in its history, making an £800,000 loss in the half-year which ended on
October 29. In the previous six months they had made a £9.8million
profit.

Last year La Senza had a turnover of around £140million. They are currently owned by private equity group Lion Capital.

Accountants KPMG will continue to
work with the company, which has 146 stores and 18 concessions in the
UK, in a bid to safeguard its future and employees.

The retail sector has seen a number of high-profile chains suffer at the hands of a consumer spending squeeze in the UK.

Fashion
specialist Jane Norman, wine merchant Oddbins and department store TJ
Hughes have all fallen into administration in recent months.

They do great pj’s but the underwear is far too expensive for what it is and they dont cater for us ladies with large bust sizes either!

This is the first of many that will go under.
Selling overpriced goods that can be bought elsewhere for
a fraction of the price.
The British Shoppers are getting wise to the Rip Offs

I love this shop, how sad! I’d better get to a store quick, one of my Christmas presents is la senza vouchers, I know ’cause I peeked 😉

My wife has bought some lovely underware and numerous quality brushed cotton PJ’s and stuff from both their shop and website in the past, but has commented the quality had dropped this year and looked elsewhere. If you cut corners on quality, people do notice. Such a shame.

Yet more PRIVATE SECTOR jobs gone! Stuff the greedy, grasping public-sector and their fabulous lottery-style pensions – THIS is what the real world is like. No UNISON out to help La Senza staff, I notice – COWARDS!

… Well if they keep taking from the ‘coward’ public sector there won’t be anyone to buy their overpriced knickers will there.. We are all in this together and you cannot blame the public sector for this! The less that’s spent of the public sector the less the public sector/ any other contractors effected can spend!

I think that ‘La Senza’ may become a ‘GOLD’ mine – a David and Jacqueline Gold-mine. If anybody can turn it around, it is father and daughter, but I’d wager that Vanessa will be involved as well. Let’s just wait and see.

Read all about it……bra shop goes bust…..

That’s what happens when you sell poor quality products (shoddy tat) at inflated prices

Well said Nicky Noo- I used to buy lovely things there but then it turned into cheap moulded bras and pants.I’m surprised it lasted this long.

Oh that’s just great where am I going to get my knickers from now?
